The mission of the American Rangers who landed at the bottom of the cliff of Pointe du Hoc was to scale the 100 feet high cliff and to capture the Germans’ long range canons on top.
From this battery on top of Pointe du Hoc, the long range canons could reach the ships of Omaha fleet to the East and the ships of Utah fleet to the West.
Restrooms are available on the parking lot of Pointe du Hoc.
You will hear the story of the brave Rangers who fought on Pointe du Hoc.
The battlefield in Pointe du Hoc is still intact since this battery was liberated in 1944. You will have the opportunity to explore the battlefield and to get inside the German casemates and bunkers. The command post on the edge of the cliff of Pointe du Hoc is also open to the public.
You will see the little town of Carentan from a distance. Carentan was a strategic objective for the 101rst American Airborne division. A part of the battle of Carentan is featured in the series “Band of Brothers”, under the name of “Bloody Gulch”.
As we drive above the river you will discover the “Barquette Lock”. The Barquette Lock was also very strategic for the liberation of this area on June 6, 1944. The Barquette Lock was an objective for the 501rst Parachute Infantry Regiment (P.I.R.) from the 101rst Airborne Division.
We will pass drop zone D for the paratroopers of the 101rst Airborne Division. You will hear about drop zone D again later in the tour.
